50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet

Heroes book - 50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet - stories about American Heroes
More information

Thomas Edison - The Wizard of Menlo Park

Thomas Edison invented thousands of things. When his experiments didn't work the first time, or the hundredth time, or even the thousandth time, he just kept trying. "Tom" always knew he could get the job done. In fact, he had so much DETERMINATION that he tried 9,990 experiments before finding the right wire to make a light bulb glow! As he once said, "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration."

Quotes:

"I never perfected an invention that I did not think about in terms of the service it might give others... I find out what the world needs, then I proceed to invent.... "

"Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration. Accordingly, a 'genius' is often merely a talented person who has done all of his or her homework."

"If we all did the things we are really capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves."

Fun Facts
  • In 1878, Thomas Edison was camping in Wyoming when someone accidentally knocked a bamboo fishing pole into a campfire. He noticed its resistance to burning. When he went back to his lab in New Jersey, he proceeded to produce millions and millions of light bulbs with bamboo filaments, until he got the bright idea that tungsten worked even better.
  • Joseph Swan invented a light bulb in 1879, one year before Thomas Edison. But Swan didn't patent his idea and was accused of copying by Edison ( who did patent the idea and is therefore recognised as the inventor ) until it was shown both bulbs were produced in different processes. They then formed a joint company using the best of both technologies.
  • Thomas Edison, lightbulb inventor, was afraid of the dark! (unverified)
