| Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey - Team Players |
| |
|
Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey loved the game of baseball. But professional baseball teams before 1947 allowed only white players on a team. Jackie, a "Negro League player," and Branch, the Brooklyn Dodgers' manager, supported the goal of black and white players on the same team in the "Major" leagues. Through their COOPERATION, despite a lot angry people who didn't like the idea, America's favorite sport was finally integrated. Today, athletes of any skin color can play together.
Quotes:
"A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives. "
"I'm not concerned with your liking or disliking me... All I ask is that you respect me as a human being. "
"Life is not a spectator sport. If you're going to spend your whole life in the grandstand just watching what goes on, in my opinion you're wasting your life. "
"I did not mind the public criticism. That sort of thing has not changed any program I thought was good. - Branch Rickey"
"Jackie (Robinson), we've got no army. There's virtually nobody on our side. No owners, no umpires, very few newspapermen. And I'm afraid that many fans will be hostile. We'll be in a tough position. We can win only if we can convince the world that I'm doing this because you're a great ballplayer, a fine gentleman. - Branch Rickey"
